Workshop Descriptions

Moving Mountains
What progress as a people have we made in the United States? This workshop focuses on how we can continue to and make an impact on the world whether it is through charity organizations that work to aid those back on the island or through our careers. A panel of professionals from a variety of different fields will be present to enlighten us with techniques on how to make a difference.

Dominicans in the Arts
Dominicans have excelled tremendously within the arts, much more than the average person can imagine. This workshop will tap into the Dominican artist through painting, fashion, and much more. A showcase of such talent will display the various domains in which the Dominican culture has flourished.

Pelo Bueno, Pelo Malo
This workshop explores the root behind the “Pelo Bueno, Pelo Malo” controversy. Questions including, but not limited to, “Is it more than just about hair? Is this more about looking less “black”? and “What is beauty or rather a Dominican’s definition of beauty?” will be discussed. This workshop will also examine racial tensions between Haiti and the Dominican Republic and what we, as students, can do to ameliorate this problem.

The Sound of Art
The Sound of Art (www.soundofart.net) was founded on exhibiting the art of the emerging artists that make up our collective, in a wide range of non-traditional venues (by choice); spaces have consisted of retail spaces, cafes, hotels, schools, rooftops, lofts, beauty salons, just to name a few. The Sound of Art also conceptualizes exhibits to draw and attract people from all walks of life. This method is used to engage different communities into the world of visual arts and create experiences using visual art as the content.
